Video Games & Violence:

Should violent video games be kept out of the hands of children by law? Or is the existing ratings system sufficient?

* Supporters of legislation against violent games say: Violent video games increase aggression in children and desensitize them to violence. Despite the rating system, violent games are often marketed and sold to children.

* Critics of legislation against violent games say: Video games should be protected as free speech, and they have not been conclusively linked to violence. Improvements have been made, and continue to be made, in keeping violent games away from children.

What do you think?

I honestly think parents should have say over what their child watches on television, listens to music wise and what games they wish their child(s) play. And I think the rating system works.

I mean kids have acess to numerous things nowadays and find ways to get things, that they arent suppose to have. Such as cigarettes and liquor. I think they need to think of a stiffer law on that and leave the judgement of what a kid can and cannot play, up to their parents.

Re: Video Games & Violence:

i agree.

But what i think is that some kids are young in age but not in mind, so sometimes i look i look at the ratings on videogames and wonder whats the point. i may have a 15 year old who is mentally uncapable of playing certain video games due to lack of maturity, or any other mental problems. and then again i may have a 5 year old baby genius who is smarter than me in many ways who could handle violent video games.

i don't know. just let the parents see and know what the game is about and let them decide for themselves.

the problem with society today is that laws and rules are taking control away from the parents. i mean i'm not allowed to beat my child to stop them from turning out bad, but it's ok for the cops to shoot them in the street once they are bad. the less control parents have, the worse kids are turning out.

Nowadays children have access to almost anything because Parent's arent too bothered. Most of them have access to the internet and most likely every site thats on there. Some parents are strict but personaly I don't think it matters too much what game a child plays at a certain age. If your 13 playing an 18 game, its not as if your gonna go play out the game in real life.

Parents need to pay attention to what their children are doing. Young, impressionable children should not be subjected to violence in any manor, but that is the parent’s responsibility. Playing violent video games do not make normal, mentally stable teenagers commit violent crimes. There are other forces at work in the minds of the kids that go on shooting sprees and commit other acts of violence. The warning signs are there and it is the parent’s responsibility to look for them and help their children if these warning signs are there.

Yeah, young children definatly need to be watched by their parents or their guardians. Because at that age they're just learning about the world, I don't think it needs to be strict though as you get more older.

Apparently noone wants to be a parent any more. Another fine example of passing the blame.

Free media in all forms, let parents decide whats right for their children.

it all started when they said you could no longer spank your kid...or it's abuse and you go to jail. the control was taken out of parents hands...then kids got worse...now they want parents to step in again, but alck of disciplining has made parents not want the job anymore.

Hey, if the Microsoft sells Halo to mature adults who aren't crazy then go for it. There are non violent people, like myself, who enjoy a good ole' fashion shoot em up game. I am not affected in anyway. It's all the parents fault. Here read this: http://maddox.xmission.com/beat.html now you have to realize that this guy is joking. He posts this kind of stuff but it's hilarious so don't take him so seriously. Why should some violent kids ruin violent games for the rest of us nonviolent people. PARENTS TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR KIDS.
