Ky. Couple Throws Out, Then Finds, $4 Million Lotto Winner
Ticket Was In Garbage Can
UPDATED: 6:29 pm EDT July 13, 2005
DANVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky couple threw away a winning lottery ticket worth $4 million -- but the story has a happy ending.
One story is how the winning Lotto South ticket ended up in the trash, the other is what pop singer Celine Dion had to do with the couple claiming their prize, Louisville, Ky., television station WLKY reported Wednesday.
After taxes, Paul and Carol Daniels ended up with $1.46 million in the Lotto South lottery in Kentucky.
The fiasco began shortly after the June 29 drawing when Paul Daniels, of Danville, read the numbers wrong and tossed the ticket into the trash.
The next day, his wife, Carol, heard on TV that the winning ticket had been purchased in Danville, the television station reported.
"So, I got the garbage can, set it up on the sink and got me another garbage bag and I found it," Paul Daniels said.
Singer Celine Dion is the reason the Daniels didn't immediately rush to Louisville to claim their money. She had a concert in Las Vegas, and the Danielses had tickets. They also spent some time gambling while they were there.
"I told the dealer out there and the man I was playing with, 'You know, I won the Kentucky Lottery last week,'" Paul Daniels said. "They said 'Yeah, and that's why you are playing $5.'"
The Danielses said they have plans for the money. Carol had problems holding back the tears just talking about it, the television station reported.
"We have two sons, eight grandchildren, and six teenage grandchildren who are looking at college," Carol Daniels said.
Added Paul Daniels: "There will be a trust fund for our grandkids to go to school."
Carol is the principal at Mercer County Elementary School, and Paul retired from the Kentucky School for the Deaf.
The couple took the cash option and after taxes, they ended up with $1.46 million, WLKY reported.

Coworkers Share $170 Million Jackpot
Here we go again....
:gfrg:
Winning Ticket Sold At Painesville Convenient Food Mart
UPDATED: 1:48 pm EDT July 25, 2005
PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- Six maching shop workers apparently won the grand prize in the latest Mega Millions drawing.
Lottery officials said the winning ticket from Friday night's drawing -- worth $170 million -- was sold at Convenient Food Mart in the northeast Ohio city of Painesville.
Bob Hennessey, of Geneva, said he and five other workers from a local machine shop won the jackpot.
He said the coworkers put in $5 each on Friday.
This makes the fifth time an Ohio player has won the Mega Millions game. The last Ohio winning ticket -- worth $106 million -- was sold in the Cleveland suburb of Warrensville Heights, Ohio.
Along with the grand prize winner Friday night, three players matched all five numbers but not the Mega Ball number, said Mardele Cohen, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Lottery. They will receive second prizes of $250,000 each.
The winning numbers from Friday night's drawing were: 7, 18, 27, 35 and 54. The Mega Ball number was 34.
The numbers were drawn live on NewsChannel5 Friday night..
I was just in that area last weekend fishing, but didnt buy a ticket there!! :jutrj:
