My Tips:
Use a brushed BG
Take out the smaller abyss pic
Have the font at a higher opac and put a 1 pixel stroke around it
Good blending though

well photoshop comes with a variety of brushes you could use to paint with..there are also brushes all over the web that you could add to your files...you use those brushes to make really interesting looking backgrounds.
